The city’s population in 1916 was just under 500 people—mostly farmers who had recently moved from neighboring communities or farther away states. The need for an education center became apparent, and a small wooden building situated near what is now downtown West Fork was opened. This humble structure contained two classrooms which were utilized for teaching students in grades one through eight, who were taught by two teachers.
